Radiator coolant–in short–prevents your engine from overheating. If your engine were to overheat, you would face pricey mechanical failures. Coolant mixes with water in a car's radiator and prevents the water from freezing and boiling (in reaction to external temperatures). Now that we're in the heart of the summer, the latter should be your primary concern. So, we at Driver's Way in Birmingham are here to give you the low down.
Coolant is a mixture of water and antifreeze. While a 50/50 split should do the trick, the more antifreeze you add, the higher you bring the boiling point...and the lower you bring the freezing point. When your engine begins to burn through gasoline, about 1/3 of the energy will become heat energy (or exhaust). This heat energy cannot just sit in the engine...this is where coolant comes in.
Without coolant, the heat produced by the engine itself would lead to mechanical failure. Coolant should be inspected every so often to protect against corrosion. We at Driver's Way wouldn't want to see you stranded on the side of the road because you're in need of a little coolant. Schedule an appointment with our service department today; we'll prep your car for the warm weather. Coolant is just the first step. It's summer. You and your car both need to be kept cool.
